Stories about Thomas the Tank Engine first appeared in 1946, in The Railway Series by the Reverend W.V. Awdry.
First appearing in a book, Thomas the Tank Engine, was a station pilot
and he used to shunt (move) coaches and trucks for the bigger engines, around
the switching yard. He aspired to do more important jobs, such as pulling
the express train like Gordon, but his lack of experience prevented him
from doing so.
After Thomas rescued James from an accident, along with the Fat Controller
(who was then known as the Fat Director) it was decided that he was a Really
Helpful Engine, and ready for his own branch line. He has remained in charge
of his line ever since.

Thomas & Friends: Best of Percy, DVD with toy train Thomas & Friends: Best of Percy, DVD only (Currently Unavailable!)
This special collector's edition features nine favorite
stories where Percy's spunk and determination lead him into all sorts
of humorous situations. With classic storytelling by George Carlin
and Ringo Starr, this commemorative video honoring Percy includes
these nine terrific tales: The Ghostly Trip - Percy delights in scary stories and is disappointed when Thomas and the others tell him they are not true. When an accidental bump coats him with a freight full of white powdery lime, he decides to play a ghostly prank on his pal Thomas. A Scarf for Percy - It is the coldest winter day and Percy wishes for a scarf to keep warm. After an argument with James, he steams into the station, crashing into a load of cartons. This time he really gets into a jam - literally. And the scarf he ends up with turns out to be Sir Topham Hatt's trousers! Percy Takes a Plunge - Percy insists on testing the limits. He ignores a warning sign and decides to ask the rail cars to help him play a trick on Thomas and the others. But instead of proving his point, he finds himself testing the waters. Percy's Predicament - Percy annoys the rail cars by ordering them around. The cars won't allow him to brake at the station and he finds himself stuck. Thomas, Percy and the Mail Train - The mail is delayed by weather and Percy wants to make up time on the next run. Harold the Helicopter brags that he can deliver mail more swiftly, but Percy delivers on time. Percy Runs Away - The little green engine is shunting cars on the main line and not heeding the others' warning that he should whistle to the signal man. When Gordon comes steaming toward him with the express train, Percy backs up and can't stop. Percy and the Signal - Again, Percy's tricks get him into trouble. He pretends to know what all the signals mean, but when he comes up to an unfamiliar sign, he ends up going in the wrong direction. Percy Proves a Point - to Harold in this episode. The haughty helicopter calls Percy slow and old-fashioned, but the little green engine proves his power in a thrilling race. Percy's Promise - is to bring a group of children home from the beach on time. It's summer on the island of Sodor, but a spell of bad weather almost prevents their return. Though the trip has its wet spots, Percy brings the children back safely, prompting Sir Topham Hatt to dub him a "Really Useful Engine." < back to top > |
